Darwin Weather
With two very prominent seasons known as the Wet Season and the Dry Season, the weather for Darwin can go from one extreme to the next. One thing is constant though, and that is no matter what time of year you are travelling to Darwin you can expect warm sunny days and hot balmy nights both in summer and winter. When people think of Darwin, they think of a city that is plagued by cyclones but this is not the case. Cyclone Tracey hit the shores of Darwin back in 1974 this was in fact the last time a cyclone ever came to this part of Australia, except for Cyclone Helen which hit in 2008 but didn’t cause too much damage, as most of the cyclones that come close to Australia are usually drawn to either the west or eastern coasts of Australia.
The Wet Season in the Northern Territory city of Darwin is appropriately named with a high rainfall being present during the months of December through to March and can usually see temperatures rising to around the mid 30’s during the day and falling to the high 20’s come nightfall. With the Wet Season in Darwin, everything comes to life, the rivers are full, the waterfalls are cascading and the flora and fauna just flourish. The rains fall mostly in the afternoon and into the night during the wet season and bring stunning lightning shows to sit back and watch a night time.
After February the rains seem to drop off and during March and April, strong winds come through the city and dry the surrounding region. Days are warm and the nights can still be the occasional passing storm to admire as these storms as somewhat of an attraction to Darwin. Temps can sit at a comfortable 24 degrees during this time making it even more attractive to get out and about and experience all that Darwin has to offer.
If you are visiting Darwin between May and September you should brace yourself for the Dry Season with temperatures rising to the high 30s and air conditioning can sometimes be a requirement for your accommodation. Even though the days can be hot and balmy the humidity is low and with the dry heat, you still want to get out and about. Many people make their way to Darwin between this time as rains are scarce and many of the attractions that you couldn’t visit during the Wet Season become open and available for tourists to venture to.
Darwin experiences beautiful sunny days for pretty much most of the year, making your trip here very enjoyable. But no matter what time of year you are tripping here you will get to see and do so much of what Darwin offers in the way of attractions and activities. During October and November for anyone visiting in these months, you are going to need air conditioning as temps rise throughout this pre-monsoon period and the humidity is high.
The weather that Darwin experiences throughout the year can usually be described as hot but still very inviting. It doesn’t matter if it is raining or not, you will still enjoy a holiday filled with adventure, culture, history, and plenty of famous attractions.
