Northern Region & Gulf
The Northern Region of the Northern Territory is home to the capital city of Darwin. This is Australia’s northern most city and it is the economic center for the state. Darwin was one of the few places in Australia to see action during World War Two when it was attacked by Japanese bombers. It was practically destroyed on Christmas Eve in 1974 when Cyclone Tracey roared through and since then practically everything has been rebuilt and Darwin now presents as a new and vibrant modern city. There is an international airport and many overseas visitors choose Darwin as their entry point into Australia. Many organised tours depart from Darwin to destinations across the country and it is the jumping off point for thousands of travellers every year, who choose to do a motorhome or campervan holiday throughout Australia. The ‘Ghan’ which is the north south rail link from Adelaide also terminates here. Visitors to the Northern Territory wanting to visit Kakadu National Park and Ayres Rock in Central Australia as well as many other destinations join tour and transfers here.
Litchfield National Park lies just to the south of Darwin and is accessible using day tours. This is a special region famous for its fantastic scenery which includes tall sandstone escarpments and lofty waterfalls. The rivers are crocodile and barramundi infested and the park is popular with tourists and sports fishermen alike. To the north of Darwin are the Tiwi islands. This is a remote location where you can experience the Aboriginal culture or go fishing in pristine waters. There are both day tours and extended tours available. The islands can be accessed by ferry or by air from Darwin.
