Kakadu National Park weather is said to be beautiful one day and perfect the next with clear blue skies being present for pretty much all of the year. There are two seasons that Kakadu experiences and they are the Wet Season and the Dry Season. The Top End is known for its hot summer days and balmy nights that brings tropical rains come the later part of the afternoon and can sometimes really put on a great lighting display which has become somewhat of an attraction for tourist as the lightning strikes light up the sky.
Some people think that the dry season is always the best time to visit Kakadu National Park, but this isn’t actually the case as both the dry season and the wet season can be great times to visit as both seasons present some breathtaking scenes and stunning attractions to experience for yourself. The Dry Season is from May through to September and the Wet Season comes in around late October and carries on through to late April during this time can see very high amounts of rainfall and can cut some roads off making travel a little hard at times. During the Wet season, its recommended that a four-wheel drive is needed but not necessary as all of the main roads through Kakadu and leading to it all completely sealed making it easy driving for two-wheel cars.
Springtime in Kakadu can see temperatures at around the early 30s during the day and fall to around the mid-teens come nightfall, making daily activities great for anyone wanting to explore and see what Kakadu has in store for them during the night it is comfortable sleeping as air conditioning may not even be needed.
Summer which is December to February can soar high on the temperature scales to the high 30’s making air conditioning a necessity for travelling and accommodation during these months, storms are more prevalent as this is the peak of the Wet Season. Most attractions aren’t accessible during the wet season especially Twin Falls and Jim Jim Falls, but what a sight to see if you take to the skies. Autumn sees comfortable temps around 33 degrees during the day and an average 17 degrees at night time and winter, even though it won’t feel like winter sits at approximately 30 degrees during the day and the mid-teens come nightfall. Kakadu has over 280 days of clear sunny days throughout the year!
There are advantages and disadvantages to coming to Kakadu during the Wet Season and the Dry Season. During the Dry Season, camping is easy but tourist numbers are high, and because the rainfall isn’t so high all attractions are open but the waterfalls are just a small trickle compared to what they are like in the Wet Season. During the Wet Season, tourist numbers are low and many of the campsites won’t have too many visitors making your holiday even more enjoyable as you won’t have to deal with too many other people. Dry Season sees a lot less insects and between the months of Wet Season, everything comes to life and feels fresh and new and replenished. No matter what time of year you decide to visit Kakadu, it will be an experience to remember and you will wish your trip here never had to end. Always check the weather for Kakadu before you begin your journey so you are well-planned and organised.
