Victoria River
Traveling west of Katherine NT you will come across the Victoria River Region including the town of Timber Creek, Victoria River Roadhouse, Gregory National Park and the mighty Victoria River. There are a number of places where along the highway where the visitor can stop and take short walks into the newly established Gregory National Park.
The area around Victoria River on the Victoria Highway is known as the Gregory National Park and would rank as one of the most beautiful and dramatic areas in the territory. The ranges rise in huge amphitheaters with rugged cliffs tumbling into scree slopes.
It is absolutely awesome to drive through this area, On both sides you have huge escarpment ranges, the unique Boab trees and the Victoria River weaving through the deep valleys and gorges. There is plenty to see and do in this region.
The Victoria River area’s main centre is the tiny town of Timber Creek, west of Katherine. Local fish are Timber Creek’s biggest attraction and the Victoria River is one of the best places to catch a big barramundi.
Gregory National Park sits at Timber Creek’s doorstop and covers an area of around 13,000 square kilometres. The park features spectacular gorge scenery, rare wildlife species, ancient boab trees, and major traces of Aboriginal culture, and European exploration and pastoral history. There’s also an extensive network of four-wheel-drive tracks in the park. The Keep River National Park, 170 kilometres west of Timber Creek, is noted for its sandstone landforms and has some great walking trails.
The Victoria River crossing is Located 194km west of Katherine and is the Victoria River Roadhouse, situated on the banks of the Victoria River. It’s a beautiful area with the Red Valley Gorge being just behind the Roadhouse and providing a shady and scenic rest area for travelers. A wide variety of wildlife can be seen on a walk along the riverbank. Boat cruises are also available.
